At the February 28th auction of Fine Photographs and Photobooks at Swann Auction Galleries, New York City, two images were sold relevant to African diaspora photography.
Doris Ulman’s Roll, Jordan, Roll sold for $32, 000 (including buyer’s premium). The well-known photobook was estimated at $ 20,000-30,000. Roll, Jordan, Roll contains hand-pulled photogravures depicting former slaves and their descendents on the Gullah coastal region of South Carolina.
The same lot sold at Sotheby’s New York: Saturday, October 16, 2004 for $57, 600, and on October 11, 2005 for $ 26,400 (including buyer’s premium).
